Why Futerra TRM

Futerra® TRM is a three-dimensional nylon Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM) made of polyamide (nylon) filaments thermally fused at their intersections to create a homogeneous matrix. As soon as it is installed, Futerra TRM protects against erosion by reducing the impact of wind and water on the surface and preventing soil runoff.

Ninety-five percent of the Futerra TRM matrix is open space, which supplements nature’s own erosion control system by reinforcing plant root systems. This “artificial root structure” provides new vegetation with the stable platform it needs to survive and develop, even under the most adverse conditions. As the roots grow, they become entwined within the lofty and open Futerra TRM matrix, creating an extremely stable cover. When fully vegetated, Futerra TRM can double the effectiveness of natural vegetation and replace hard armor systems at a fraction of the cost. The tough root-reinforcing system anchors vegetation and protects against hydraulic lift and shear forces created by high-volume discharges. It can withstand velocities greater than 20 feet per second and shear stresses of 10 pounds per square foot.

Futerra TRM is very flexible, for ease of laying, even at low temperatures. Futerra TRM is light and flexible, making it easy to handle and install. Standard Futerra TRM rolls are eight-feet (2.4 m) wide and have no welds or seams, promoting more rapid installation with fewer overlaps. Futerra TRM is quick and cost-effective to lay in both parallel and perpendicular direction to the slope, thereby ensuring significant cost savings.

The pyramid-like structure with vertically oriented individual monofilaments ensures the mat retains its shape, even when filled with soil. All Futerra TRM erosion prevention mats are rot-proof and resistant to all substances and organisms occurring naturally in the soil. The mats are highly weather-resistant and durable.

As you would expect from a Green Design Engineering™ product, Futerra TRM is non-toxic and chemically neutral; making it suitable even for use in drinking water reservoirs. The line also features improved UV resistance for longer life.

The High-Performance TRM (HP-TRM), Futerra® R45 TRM is also avaialable. The improved UV resistance ensures increased durability in arid conditions and/or where vegetative establishment may require multiple growing seasons. Additionally, Futerra R45 TRM is reinforced with a flexible polyester geogrid to create a high modulus, high-strength TRM for the most demanding applications. However, unlike other HP-TRMs, Futerra R45 TRM also provides high-performance vegetative establishment.
